Starting pay: $9 per hour

Hours: 10-15 hours a week; including day, night and weekend shifts

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of specialized technical duties including Primary Duties required in Library Assistant.  The Library Assistant performs a variety of detailed moderately complexed technical support within one or more areas of the library.  Requiring skill in and an understanding of established methods, procedures and the user of specific library tools within the area where assigned.


Open/Close Duties:

  • Unlock door and turn off alarm. Empty book drop and bring in books and check them in. Turn on/off computers. Turn lamps on/off.
  • Log into Polaris on the staff computers.
  • Check in van delivery-unload bins and check in materials.
  • Bring in mail and newspapers.
  • Lock doors, final check library: bathrooms, conference room, study carrels. Set alarm.


Circulation/Reference Desk Duties:

  • Check in and out books, CD’s, and DVD’s using the automated circulation system (Polaris)
  • Sort incoming materials
  • Renew books and other library materials for patrons
  • Answer inquiries regarding basic circulation policies such as loan periods, fines and holds
  • Instruct patrons in use of online computer holdings
  • Register new patrons
  • Provide basic reference services to patrons for routine requests for information
  • Assist in making copies for patrons
  • Assist patrons with internet and basic computer skills, resumes, scanning, etc.
  • Educating patrons on renewing and placing holds
  • Collect revenue from copies and over dues and book sales
  • Bundle and send out materials at end of day


Additional Duties May Include:

  • Basic knowledge of library and inventory
  • Knowledge of books and authors
  • Check in and enter new magazines into library’s automated systems
  • Ready books and media materials for cataloging (labels, bar codes, etc.)
  • Cover books
  • Keep magazines in order, maintain back issues for reference
  • Administrative filing of bills, financials, meetings, and patron information
  • Fill requests from other libraries using automated Bridges Pick List
  • Assist in training new personnel
  • Book Club: Find books and order, manage monthly club meeting and follow up
  • Plan and assist with adult events and activities
  • Help with the web page, catalogue, help with Facebook and other social media sites
  • Willing to attend training/workshops as needed
  • Check and file paperwork for new patron’s registration
  • Manage book sales, maintain, clean and sort
  • Accept and maintain free magazines
  • Send letters on overdues and fines using Polaris program
  • Shelve materials, keep library materials presentable to patrons, tidy library, shelf read
  • Remove items from hold shelf after 7 days
  • Maintain computers and printers
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Assist children and parents on book recommendation
  • Substitute for children’s librarian when on vacation or sick time


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum Education-High School Diploma
  • Basic Knowledge of library and inventory
  • Knowledge of books and authors
  • Computer knowledge
  • Experience and/or knowledge related to the primary duties of this position


Required Knowledge and Skills

General knowledge and understanding of the nature and function of libraries and library services.  Use of bibliographic records, ability to input and review information and resolve minor library technical problems.
